The folks at AkihabaraNews.com have just come up with a review of Panasonic's latest micro four thirds camera the  Lumix GF1. And apparently they're more impressed by it then Panasonic's previous offerings the G1 and the GH1, they're even more impressed by it then the Olympus EP-1 which took the camera world by storm a few months back. • News that caught my eye... News that caught my eye...

    • From: naqhi
    • Description:

Here are three interesting news articles that caught my attention. One is about the dSLR control software that's been available for you iphone users out there(lucky you!), the other is on Adobe's release of Photoshop.com an image manipulation software for you iphone users (again damn you iphone users...) and the last thankfully has nothing to do with the iphone, is the wireless memory cards from Eye-fi. The first two are self explanatory but still interesting news for iphone users with or without dSLRs now the only thing left for Apple to do is put a decent camera in the iPhone. The wireless memory cards on the other hand are curious advancements for memory cards in my opinion, a sort of who would've thunk it situation... Anyway for the full story hit the links below...

    • From: naqhi
    • Description:

Starting tomorrow till the end of the weekend(that sounds strange)... there'll be a Nikon show at the Mid Valley Megamall. It's called the Nikon Show but they'll only be showing their newest cameras and also there'll be some models there and contest and such, you know the deal. This time though it's purely for the still photography purist, so no video presence here which means we at V9kon get to be in the audience this time. Our friends Kelvin Chan and Louis Pang will be there to give talks on their specialty so that's definitely not to be missed but you shouldn't miss Erna Dyanty and Jimin Lai either. Though i'm not too sure how it'll go since it'll be at the ground floor, center court. Anyway, it's on for four days so there's no reason to miss it! Below is the link...

The built-in projector easily projects an image size from approximately 5 inches up to 40 inches*1. A supplied remote control means that you can wirelessly operate both the projector and usual camera functions, and a simple projection stand is supplied for optimal viewing wherever you are.

      Getting the shot you imagine
The COOLPIX S1000pj features Scene Auto mode, whereby the camera automatically selects the appropriate scene mode based on the contents of your shot, allowing picture perfect images at the touch of a button. In addition, five functions to reduce image blur and the Smart Portrait System ensures that you can get those ‘red carpet smiles’ every time. An additional feature enables users to ‘airbrush’ someone’s face using the Skin Softening function to reduce the appearance of blemishes. Together with face tracking and anti-shake functionality, the COOLPIX S1000pj helps you to get the shot you envisaged without any hassle.

      my Picturetown
You can now store your images safely and securely using Nikon’s my Picturetown, a free online digital photo storage and sharing service. You get 2GB of space free to use for storing thousands of memories and you can upgrade your membership to Gold Account at any time if you need to store more pictures.

      Features

Sharper results with five advanced Nikon image stabilising features*3
Nikon's Optical lens shift and Electronic VR image stabilisation systems combine to help produce blur-free images. High ISO 6400*4 capability allows faster shutter speeds when shooting in low light or capturing fast-moving subjects. Motion Detection automatically controls shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for subject movement and camera shake. And, Nikon’s original BSS (Best Shot Selector) function automatically shoots a series of sequential frames and saves the one with the sharpest focus.

Nikon’s Smart Portrait System with Skin Softening
Face-priority AF helps produce more satisfying portraits by adjusting focus and exposure for as many as 12 faces in the framed shot. Skin Softening function detects and analyses a framed subject’s skin, and then adjusts smoothness to produce enhanced results. Smile Timer automatically releases the shutter when the subject smiles, while its Blink Proof function shoots two sequential frames, then saves the one in which the subject’s eyes are widest open. Blink Warning presents an alert when it suspects that someone in the shot has blinked. In-Camera Red-Eye Fix automatically corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory.

Intelligent automated shooting modes that promote carefree shooting
Nikon’s Scene Auto Selector makes it faster and easier to capture the moment by eliminating the need to manually select a scene mode to match the intended shot. This intelligent function determines the subject, analyses the surrounding settings, and then automatically selects the appropriate scene mode for optimal results. Subject Tracking enhances the shooting experience by following the subject’s movement to ensure clear focus and quick response when that special shutter opportunity presents itself. Subject Tracking even functions if the subject moves out of the frame for a second or two.

      Quick Retouch
Quick Retouch automatically adjusts the contrast and saturation of selected photos to create an enhanced copy with the right finishing touch.

  • What is Nikon planning for Jul What is Nikon planning for July 30 and August 4?

    • From: naqhi
    • Description:

It seems there's another buzz starting, but this time is surrounding Nikon. Rumor is there's going to be some interesting announcements to be made on July 30 and August 4. And the folks at 1001NoisyCameras have a write-up on it.

      Here's what they say...

What is Nikon planning for July 30 and August 4? D3s? D300s? D60s? Lenses?

Now that the E-P1 mania has cooled off a little bit, our Forum Patrol noticed some excitement on the Nikonian front: This must-read dpreview forums thread is discussing what to expect from Nikon. What to expect? Yes, expect, because Swedish website Kamerabild.se says there are two events scheduled by Nikon on July 30 and August 4.

And this should not be a surprise, as August is typically a Coolpix burst-mode month. If you look at 2008, there was a six-pack of Coolpix models headlined by the scandalous quasi-RAWsumer P6000. And in 2007, there was an eight-pack of Coolpix models. So we know there will be plenty of Coolpix models. And we can hope that they can come up with something more advanced and more RAW-friendly than the P6000 [reviews]. Maybe that's why the announcements are spaced apart, so they can give the Coolpixies some breathing room. Which could then perhaps suggest that the Coolpix annies happen on July 30.

But that's not what's generating the excitement in the forums! The excitement is about the potential of new DSLRs. August 2008 saw the ground-breaking Nikon D90. It's highly unlikely we'll see anything D90-related. Where the excitement may come is August 2007. That was when Nikon punched Canon in the mouth with the D3 and D300 power-duo.

Nikon has the habit of producing small letter updates of their DSLRs, like the D70/D70s, D2X/D2Xs, D40/D40x, and so on. So it is possible that one or both of the D3/D300 power-duo may get refreshed, with DSLR-Video of course being the elephant in the room. We already saw an alleged french D300s office leak. Needless to say, a D300s is more likely than a D3s for a number of reasons. But at the same time, one could point out that neither one is actually under pressure from any particular camera - with the exception perhaps of the Pentax K7 expectations-cloud.

On the consumer-tier, considering that the D5000 just came out, and that the D40 has been around since the beginning of time and the D60 is its natural replacement, I doubt they are going to come up with a new camera, unless they have decided to keep the D60 specs/design around for a couple of more years. In which case, they may do a D60s (or D60x if they go with 12mp sensor), which would start a new product lifecycle and buy them additional retail time (eg D70/D70s).

So with that as a long-winded preface, it is time to check the forum discussion, which includes a lot of commentary by Nikon SuperGuru Thom Hogan, and a lot of lens-expectations-talk.

How much of this is true well who knows really but you can't deny that they've got some interesting tidbits of facts to back it up. Be sure to hit the link above to get to the original article where they link their sources for the rumors.

  • Children’s International Photo Children’s International Photography Contest Focuses Worldwide Lens On Biodiversity

    • From: naqhi
    • Description:

WASHINGTON - Youngsters around the world are invited to enter the "See the Bigger Picture" photography contest by submitting images illustrating plants, animals or anything else that captures biodiversity to www.seethebiggerpicture.org. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to National Geographic headquarters in Washington, D.C., and will meet with renowned photojournalist Joel Sartore, a contest judge. Entries must be received by Sept. 8, 2009.

"See the Bigger Picture" is a joint project of Airbus, National Geographic and the Secretariat of the Convention of Biological Diversity in support of "The Green Wave" — an outreach program that promotes the goals of the United Nations biodiversity treaty and that will contribute to the celebration of the International Year of Biodiversity in 2010. As part of "The Green Wave" project, children and youth in schools worldwide plant a local tree species on May 22 each year, uniting to send a "green wave" across time zones from east to west.

The organizers hope the "See the Bigger Picture" contest will encourage children around the globe to snap and submit a photograph illustrating biodiversity in their community or from their travels and help to create the world’s largest biodiversity outreach program.

"I am thrilled that Airbus is getting behind the biodiversity photo contest" said Sartore. "If we stand a chance of preserving the delicate balance of life and protecting the future of the fragile planet I’ve been photographing for 20 years, big business must be involved. It’s great to involve kids, too, and to motivate them to take notice of the environment around them. I hope this will be a fun summer project for them"

Sartore, one of National Geographic’s best wildlife photographers, suggests a few photo tips to get the perfect shot.
-Shoot early in the morning or late in the day for the best light. This is also when many kinds of animals are at their most active and interesting.
-Work all the angles; walk around your subject 360 degrees to find the best background, then also go from a bird’s eye view (up high) to a worm’s eye view (low to the ground) to get photos that are fresh and unexpected.
-Study your subjects, and have patience. While nature can be unpredictable, some animals have routines just like people. Spending a little time observing what your subjects do and when they do it can pay off with much better photos.
-You don’t have to travel around the world to view and photograph wildlife. The variety of animals in your own back yard — from insects to birds to amphibians — may surprise you.
